Polymyxin

Polymyxin M | Polymyxins

Basic polypeptide antibiotic group obtained from Bacillus polymyxa. They affect the cell membrane by detergent action and may cause neuromuscular and kidney damage. At least eleven different members of the polymyxin group have been identified, each designated by a letter.

Gangliosides

Sialoglycosphingolipids

A subclass of ACIDIC GLYCOSPHINGOLIPIDS. They contain one or more sialic acid (N-ACETYLNEURAMINIC ACID) residues. Using the Svennerholm system of abbrevations, gangliosides are designated G for ganglioside, plus subscript M, D, or T for mono-, di-, or trisialo, respectively, the subscript letter being followed by a subscript arabic numeral to indicated sequence of migration in thin-layer chromatograms. (From Oxford Dictionary of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, 1997)

Rec A Protein

RecA Protein | RecA Protease | A Protein, Rec | Protease, RecA | Protein, Rec A | Protein, RecA

Protein from E.coli rec gene. Catalyzes the ATP-driven exchange of DNA strands in genetic recombination. The product of the reaction consists of a duplex and a displaced single-stranded loop which has the shape of the letter D and is therefore called a D-loop structure. ATP is hydrolyzed to ADP during the reaction; also has proteolytic activity.

Comment [Publication Type]

Comment | Comment (PT) | Commentary | Commentary (PT) | Editorial Comment | Editorial Comment (PT) | Viewpoint | Viewpoint (PT)

This publication type designates the author's statement of retraction: it should be differentiated from RETRACTED PUBLICATION [PUBLICATION TYPE] which labels the retracted publication.

Chromosome Fragility

Chromosome Fragile Sites | Fragile Sites, Chromosome | Chromosome Fragile Site | Chromosome Fragilities | Fragile Site, Chromosome | Fragilities, Chromosome | Fragility, Chromosome | Site, Chromosome Fragile | Sites, Chromosome Fragile

Susceptibility of chromosomes to breakage and translocation or other aberrations. Chromosome fragile sites are regions that show up in karyotypes as a gap (uncondensed stretch) on the chromatid arm. They are associated with chromosome break sites and other aberrations. A fragile site on the X chromosome is associated with FRAGILE X SYNDROME. Fragile sites are designated by the letters "FRA" followed by the designation for the specific chromosome and a letter which refers to the different fragile sites on a chromosome (e.g. FRAXA).
